A rare complete performance of Handel’s ‘German Arias’, nine tender musical gems set to poems by Handel’s good friend Barthold Brockes, describing the joy and beauty to be found in Nature, for soprano voice accompanied by a single violin and basso continuo.

These intimate and tender songs, set for a small ensemble with soprano, exemplify Handel’s ability to reflect a beautiful text in music and create a sense of dialogue between voices and instruments. Victoria-based, internationally renowned soprano Catherine Webster joins three festival favorites for this intimate performance. Instrumental works by Handel and Erlebach complete the program.

“What always strikes me when I revisit these pieces is how everything you know, love and indeed have heard in Handel –  fits efficiently and gorgeously into this microcosm of a song collection.  After living and working in England (and in English!) for such a long time, I think it must have afforded him great pleasure to return to his native tongue and show his admiration for his friend Brockes with this homage to the divine in nature.  A perfect day for me would be an early morning misty walk in the forest, followed by a simple and beautiful meal prepared with friends after which we might repair to the living room for song and revelry.  It makes me smile to think of Handel doing just this…maybe with a red-faced Brockes, a violinist and some fresh-faced soprano from the last night’s opera performance!“ – soprano Catherine Webster.

Some reviews of Catherine Webster (soprano):

“…the heroine – alluringly sung by Catherine Webster – lays out and springs her trap with a combination of seductive charm and steely guile.” – San Francisco Chronicle

“Soprano Catherine Webster has one of those fresh, pure, ‘authentic-instrument’ voices that’s just perfect for this music.” – classicstoday.com review

“…soprano Catherine Webster, who performed several solo arias with sparkling, lithe beauty” – San Francisco Classical Voice

“Catherine Webster sang with her typical admirable beauty, applying the requisite amount of virginal purity to Carissimi’s plaintive melodies.” – San Francisco Classical Voice
